About the Artist

Katie Roorda (maiden name Bergdale) grew up on an small acreage in Iowa. She has spent her life encompassed by a menagerie of wildlife, imbuing her with a love and desire to work with animals. This passion led her to the 4-H program and a job at the local animal hospital. With a competing interest in art, the two subjects were perfectly united when she found the major of Biological and Pre-Medical Illustration at Iowa State University. During her undergrad, an appreciation formed for human anatomy, leading her to continue her career to become a medical illustrator.

She obtained her Master’s Degree in Medical and Biological Illustration at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine in the Art as Applied to Medicine department. She received an Award of Merit for her illustration, “Armor Composition of the Nine-Banded Armadillo” at the 2016 AMI Conference and a research grant from the Vesalius Trust for her thesis project illustrating health assessment techniques on the horseshoe crab.

Currently, she works as a medical illustrator at Osso VR, which is the leading, validated virtual reality surgical training platform designed for surgeons, sales teams, and hospital staff of all skill levels. To learn more about OssoVR, Click here!
